The Windows brand has long been associated with its flag-style multicolored logo. With the forthcoming launch of the Metro-based Windows 8, Microsoft has unveiled a new flat cornered logo for its flagship brand.
Microsoft is not being shy about the new logo’s Metro inspirations. One question that came up during initial design meeting was “your name is Windows. Why are you a flag?” Good point. Described as “humble, yet confident,” the flat color allows color shifts to be applied for personalized takes on the branding. Microsoft also said that the bold, flat design is similar to “way-finding design systems” found in airports and subways.
For reference, Microsoft also provided a graphic showing how the Windows logo has evolved over the years.
